SportDeveloping physical fitness, character and team work

The divine Author of your being has given you life, and a body finely adapted for His service; He gives you the work of preserving this body in health, nourishing it in strength, and training it in fitness for whatever special work He may give you to do in His world.

Sport plays an important role in enriching the life of the developing child. Beyond physical fitness, children learn self-discipline, obedience, team work, perseverance, goal achievement and how to respond well to both winning and losing.

At The Vine School we are committed to seeing our students grow in all spheres of life, including the physical. For this reason, Physical Education lessons are part of the regular curriculum during the school day and students are also encouraged to participate in extra-mural sports in the afternoon after school.

Extra-Mural Sports

Soccer, Netball, Chess, Mini-Cricket, Athletics and Tag-Rugby

Students from Grade 1 to 8 have practice sessions every week and the older students regularly play friendly matches against other smaller and likeminded schools.

Physical EDUCATION

Physical Education is a vital part of healthy development. At The Vine School the curriculum includes two 30 minute lessons per week for younger grades and one 45 minute lesson for older students.

Our experienced Physical Education Coach has developed a programme with fitness and skills training as the primary focus, followed by team sports and competitive games. To ensure maximum enjoyment, every child is thoroughly trained in basic skills so they can participate with confidence. We are proud of the fact that when our students graduate to other schools their skills training, fitness and discipline earn them places in top teams.

As a small school we play frienldy matches against other small schools to build confidence through fair competition. Supported by their coach, they learn teamwork, good sportsmanship and how to conduct themselves honourably whether they win or lose.

Our approach is endorsed by world-renowned sports scientist Tim Noakes of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA): “Children need to learn the basic skills first; then they need to get fit before they start to compete. But we just go straight to competition. Children in primary school don’t have the skills or the fitness or the emotional maturity to cope with highly competitive sport."

At a SSISA School Sport Summit, Prof Robin Vealey encouraged delegates to adopt the same method used by The Vine School. This is the best way to develop potential top-class sportsmen and women, with the added benefit of growing a life-long love for sport amongst all children.

Our Physical Education classes always start with stretching to prevent injuries and running to build fitness. Then they work on specific sport skills and techniques or play a friendly game.

Chess

The game of chess brings people together from different cultures, ages and backgrounds around a common bond of passion for the game.

Playing chess enhances focus, grit and the ability to plan and strategise to produce a series of moves to outwit your opponent. Our children enjoy the special blend of fun and tension, the satisfaction of winning and the challenge of improving their game to play better next time. We often see our students playing chess during break times and parents are happy to report that playing chess replaces screentime.
